Smart City Themes

Conference 2017-09-12T08:11:01+00:00

The Thought Leadership programme will lead the Smart City debate, posing the challenges of developing the future city for the business community and entrepreneurial community to respond to.

The following key themes will be explored:

Intelligent Infrastructure

Embedded sensors and ubiquitous digital communications networks are enabling a world where infrastructure assets are springing into life to become increasingly intelligent, connected and to some extent, self-aware.

Venturefest’s Future Thinkers will consider:

  • What needs to change in the planning system to enable the delivery of digitally enabled places?
  • How do cities and SMEs ensure that these new networks remain secure, and maintain personal privacy for citizens?
  • Is effective city management based on real-time big data more important than personal privacy?
  • How will VR, AR, artificial intelligence and machine learning impact our urban spaces, and what do cities need to put in place?

The Future of Work

The way we work is undergoing a radical shift towards lifelong learning, multiple careers and a race to keep up with technology. Machine learning, intelligent assistance and VR/AR are all set to revolutionise how we work and the human-tech interface.

Venturefest’s Future Thinkers will consider:

  • What are the upcoming trends and technologies that we need to consider to ensure that this quarter realises its full potential for the people of Bristol?
  • What do employers and employees need to put in place to stay compliant and relevant?
  • How can we use technology to increase diversity in the workplace?
  • How do we manage the increasing role that AI/VR/ML/AR technologies will play in our working lives?

The Future of Mobility

Urban mobility has undergone a radical shift from large-scale public infrastructure and private vehicles to the rise of mobility-on-demand services such as Whim and collaborative lift share such as BlaBlaCar. But still most city’s roads are congested.

Venturefest’s Future Thinkers will consider:

  • How can data and artificial intelligence unlock congestion in our cities?
  • As we move towards mobility-as-a-service – who will the main providers be and who will be the early adopters?
  • What is the roadmap for the West of England Combined Authority to begin implementation of driverless cars, who owns and regulates the infrastructure and what commercial models of operation might we expect?
  • How can we value our air quality as much as our road independence and whose data can we trust?

Smart Cities, Smart Citizens

Cities are where we increasingly choose to live, work and play, but as more and more of us live in cities, how can we best use technology to ensure that we build smart citizens?

Venturefest’s Future Thinkers will consider:

  • Which cities and companies are employing technologies to empower citizens?
  • How can we engage citizens in the running of their cities?
  • How can we harness the potential of collective citizen intelligence?
  • What is the role of startups in working with the public sector to solve public problems?
